A world with more to dream,
and less to worry about.

That is the long version, and it is further away than we are. Our immediate mission starts much earlier, with one person, one idea, and the question nobody builds for.

Every idea deserves
a chance in the world.

Not just the best-connected ideas, or the ones from people who already understand the ecosystem, or the ones that arrive with a deck and an introduction. Because before every company, movement or invention, there was simply someone thinking “I have an idea” and wondering what to do next.

A conversation on the street during a WWB shoot

That’s where we begin.

We believe in Step Zero.

Accelerators, incubators, funding, mentorship programmes and investor networks all become visible once somebody has already begun. Step Zero is the person before all of that: someone who has an idea but doesn’t know whether it’s good, has no founders in the family or investors in their contacts, and is asking where to even start.

I have an idea.

I don't know where to start.

Step Zero

WhereWeBegin

I know what to do next.

Every idea deserves a guide.
Every idea deserves a chance.

We exist to make the beginning less dependent on who you know, what you already know, or where you happened to start. We are not promising that every idea will succeed, only that every person with one should have a fairer chance of understanding what comes next.

  • 01Find knowledge
  • 02Meet people
  • 03Test assumptions
  • 04Discover opportunities
  • 05Take the first step
  • 06Then let the idea prove itself
Behind the scenes on a WWB shoot

Opportunity shouldn’t begin
with already having opportunity.

Talent and ideas are everywhere. Access isn’t. People begin with vastly different access to the things that decide whether an idea ever gets tried at all, and WhereWeBegin cannot undo that on its own. We can work on one part of it: making the starting line more accessible.

  • Knowledge
  • Networks
  • Mentors
  • Role models
  • Education
  • Capital
  • Exposure
  • Communities
  • Opportunities

Entrepreneurship is a tool.
Human possibility is the point.

WhereWeBegin does not exist to create more startups. We believe entrepreneurship creates agency, knowledge and pathways for people to shape the world around them, and the mission contributes towards four things.

Youth empowerment

More young people able to think: maybe I can do something about this. Not everyone needs to become an entrepreneur.

Social mobility

Nobody should need family connections or a ready-made network to find somewhere to begin. Your starting point shouldn't become your ceiling.

Access to education

The most useful lessons aren't taught in classrooms. They come from founders, failures, mentors, peers and actually trying.

Economic opportunity

Ideas become projects, projects become businesses, and businesses create livelihoods for other people. More ideas should reach that starting line.

You don’t know
what you don’t know.

People don’t dream small because they lack ambition. When all you know is all you have lived, your experiences quietly decide what you believe is possible. You cannot dream about a future you have never been shown.

What I know

My schoolMy friendsMy cityMy industryMy experiencesMy community

What I didn’t know was there

A different country
A different culture
A founder I'd never have met
A new industry
A different solution
A new market
A perspective I'd never considered
An opportunity I didn't know existed

Sometimes dreaming bigger
starts with seeing more.

Another country can show you
a different answer to the same problem.

Our international mission is to foster cross-country innovation and collaboration, not because being international sounds impressive, but because exposure changes perspective, and perspective changes what people believe is possible.

All you've known

is all you've lived

Until you meet someone

who has lived differently

And suddenly, the world gets bigger.

A founder who has sat down with WhereWeBegin
A founder who has sat down with WhereWeBegin
A founder who has sat down with WhereWeBegin
A founder who has sat down with WhereWeBegin
A founder who has sat down with WhereWeBegin
A founder who has sat down with WhereWeBegin
A founder who has sat down with WhereWeBegin

Go somewhere different.
Meet someone different.
Come back thinking differently.

Hope matters.
So does proof.

Reach tells us how many people showed up. Impact tells us what happened next. We would rather publish nothing than a number we cannot stand behind, so there are no figures here yet. These are the six questions we are building WhereWeBegin to be able to answer.

Access

Did someone reach knowledge, people or opportunities they did not have before?

Perspective

Did someone encounter a possibility they had not met before?

Connection

Did a relationship form that outlived the room it started in?

Action

Did someone take a concrete next step?

Mobility

Did someone reach an opportunity beyond their existing environment?

Ripple

Did someone go on to help somebody else begin?

Local beginnings.
Global challenges.

The work contributes towards five of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They matter to us because they are the clearest shared language for the thing we are actually trying to change: whether somebody with no obvious way in ends up with one. They keep us honest about who this is for, and they put one person finding their first step inside the same problem being worked on everywhere else.

A WhereWeBegin gathering

Every big idea was small once.

Someone has an idea. They don’t know whether it’s good, who to ask, or what they don’t know. So someone shows them where to begin. They meet someone, they learn something, they see something they hadn’t seen before, and their world gets a little bigger.

“I don’t know where to start.”

becomes “Maybe I can.”

and eventually “Let me try.”

Every idea deserves a guide.
Every idea deserves a chance.

More to dream.
Less to worry about.

Small enough to care. Ambitious enough to matter. We are not claiming every idea will succeed, only that every idea should have the opportunity to try.
